Garage makes number plates tamper-proof
FOUR thousand tamper-proof screws have been made available to the public in an effort to combat number-plate thefts.
Littlewick Green Service Station and Thames Valley Police have teamed up for the project, which charges residents nothing to have the anti-theft devices fitted.
There have been 58 number plates stolen in Maidenhead between January 1 and August 2 and many are used to steal petrol from filling stations - known as bilking.
During the same period in the whole of the Royal Borough, a total of 118 number plates were stolen and 20 of these were used in bilking crimes in theThames Valley area.
PC Marc Chapman, neighbourhood specialist officer for Cookham, said: "I hope the residents of Maidenhead will get behind this initiative and take up the free offer.
"Number plate thefts continue to be a problem, some of which are then used to commit further crime."
He added: "We are very grateful for the ongoing support shown to police and local people by Littlewick Green Service Station.
"Not only are they backing this new initiative, but they recently sponsored the neighbourhood policing team’s vehicle which is being used daily as part of our patrols."
The service station, in Bath Road, is working specifically with the local neighbourhood team for Bisham, Cookham, Hurley and the Walthams.
